Issue 28

Leonard Cohen
Live In London
2 CD / DVD

New issue is 208 action packed issue. The big-name cover stories this time around include an
exclusive interview with Trevor Burton of The Move, featuring lots of wickedly cool and rare photos.
Also, a feature on Roky Erickson’s pre-psychedelic adventures in Austin with The Spades, along with
a big feature review 13th Floor Elevators 10-CD box set. Plus the great but terminally neglected
Dave Clark Five, including interviews with Dave Clark, Lenny Davidson and producer Adrian Kerridge.

Sixties garage rock predominates as always with stories on The Good Feelins, The Daughters of
Eve, The Boy Blues, The Living Children
and TV’s Shindogs featuring the late Delaney Bramlett. Also
revealed are the strange but true tales of ‘70s Parisian proto-punks Angel Face, the Northwest’s once mysterious New Dawn, hard rockers Troyka, and New York cult underground heroes Hackamore Brick. Not to mention the bizarre saga of Philippe Debarge, the millionaire French playboy who made an amazing 1969 psych album with The Pretty Things.

And that’s not all… Jon Savage takes a look at the History of Rock Fanzines, Aaron Milenski gives
us 50 Reasons Not to Hate the Synthesizer, and of course there’s an extensive review section,
covering all the latest reissues and music-related books and DVDs. Preorder now - in soon, on its
way .

This concert was recorded live on July 17, 2008 at London's 02 Arena, his first tour in 15 years, and
the set list is pretty much indentical to his amazing shows on his recent Australian tour.

Released as a 2CD or DVD , Cohen's historic 2 1/2 hour performance presents 25 classics drawn from his 40 year repertoire. Preorder now.

Freddy King
Just Pickin'
CD

Freddy (or Freddie) King -was a guitarist who influenced guitar heroes such as Mick Taylor, Lonnie Mack and Eric Clapton. With his amped-up electric guitar and stinging lead lines, King was lauded as a premier blues guitarist when he bursted onto the scene in the early 60's right up until his premature death in 1976.

This album combines his two instrumental albums for King records - Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King (it includes the classic "Hideaway" which was covered by Eric Clapton); and Freddy King Gives You a Bonanza of Instrumentals. Anyone interested in top flight electric guitar playing should give this a listen. This album is available in limited quantities - so be quick.

Bang For Buck
Overlooked and Underpriced Compilations

J.J.Cale
Anyway the Wind Blows: The Anthology
2CDs

J.J.Cale is a "musician's musician" - an excellent guitarist whose fans include people like Eric Clapton (who has covered such as"After Midnight" and "Cocaine") and Mark Knopfler . In fact Clapton has even done gigs with Cale over the past few years.

Cale first came to the attention of the public with his laid-back hit single "Crazy Mama" (which featured some very tasty wah-wah guitar licks). One criticism that has been laid on Cale is that his albums often lack consistency- which is why a good compilation can make sense to most people interested in his music.

This compilation picks the eyes of his recorded output and includes the above mentioned songs as well as other Cale faves such as Cajun Moon, Magnolia and Call MeThe Breeze. In fact, when looking at the track listing, one realises how many other artists have covered his songs.

With 50 tracks on this 2 CD compilation (including a few rarities), excellent re-mastered sound and comprehensive booklet with well annotated biography and photographs, this set will appeal to even hardened fans. The Dot Man.
