DVD |
Montgomery, Alabama is considered to be the birthplace of the modern
Civil Rights movement after in December 1965, Rosa Parks refused to
give up her seat on a bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus boycott which came
to national attention. Singing in churches and mass meetings inspired
civil action and civil action inspired new music.
They raised their voices in song against inequality and racism. They
gave the civil rights movement its anthems and its soul. Their songs
inspired a generation to take up the struggle for civil rights and human
rights throughout America and the world. Freedom Songs retells one of the
greatest stories in American history in a dramatically new way.
The performers include Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Pete Seeger,
Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and the Staple
Singers. With never-before-seen historic footage and remarkable new
interviews with Gladys Knight, Isaac Hayes, Chuck D., Andrew Young, and Mavis Staples.
Bonus footage includes Martin Luther King's " I Have A Dream
" speech. |
Put simply , John Hammond must be regarded as one of the most important
figures in 20th century popular music. He was responsible for discovering Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, Bessie
Smith, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Pete Seeger, and Bruce
Springsteen. As a producer, writer and critic, he was credited as
a major force in integrating the music business.
On his twenty-first birthday, Hammond moved to Greenwich Village ,
where he engaged in the bohemian life and leftist subculture. Though
privileged since birth, Hammond recognized the gross injustice of the time
and began working for an integrated music world. He was the founder and DJ
for one of the first regular live jazz programs, and wrote regularly about
the racial divide.
His main concern, however, was jazz, and throughout the 1930s he was
responsible for both integrating the musicians and expanding the
audience. It was not until the late 1950s that he became active in the
industry again discovering Dylan and Springsteen amongst others. In 1975,
Hammond retired from Columbia, though he continued to scout for talent for
many years. By the time of his death in 1987, the popular music industry
had grown to be a more integrated and politically responsible community,
and much of this progress was due to the talent and commitment of John
Hammond. |

First new recordings for legendary Sydney band - led by Radio
Birdman guitarist Chris Masuak, and Birdman cohort Johnny
Kannis - in nearly 20 years! This absolutely scorching live set sees
them primarily backing enigmatic Detroit Chanteuse Niagara,
formerly of Ron Asheton's two post-Stooges bands - Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival.. Niagara is also
highly regarded in the underground art & comics world for her artwork,
some of which graces the packaging.
This live set was recorded in front of a full-house in Sydney in 2008
(Niagara was out here for an exhibition of her artwork; she'd toured
Australia previously in 1991 with Dark Carnival - the Hitmen were the
support act).It includes killer versions of Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival faves like 'Bored' and 'Your Gonna
Die', Stooges classics like 'Little Doll' and 'TV Eye',
as well as three tracks by the Hitmen, including a brand new (and very Dictators like) original called 'Lost Weekend', and the long
lost, never before officially released tune that Masuak first wrote and
performed with Radio Birdman, called 'Death By The Gun'.

In August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen was awakened at 2 a.m.
from a nap in his trailer and brought onstage to perform with his band at
the third annual Isle Of Wight music festival. The audience of 600,000 was
in a fiery and frenzied mood.
As Cohen followed Hendrix’s set, onlookers Joan Baez, Kris
Kristofferson, Judy Collins and others stood side stage in awe as the
Canadian folk-singer songwriter- poet-novelist quietly tamed the crowd.
Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner, whose
footage of the 1970 festival did not begin to see release until 1995, was
able to capture Cohen’s performance"
The CD/DVD contains the new documentary by Lerner and the full
performance on CD. All tracks are previously unreleased (sans bits of
“Suzanne” which were featured in the documentary Message to
Love, also by Lerner ).
Also available as a 2 LP record set.

The Lost Performances
Various
Artists
DVD
|
A rare little set from The Meters -- recorded in their home turf of New
Orleans in the mid 70s, but with a groove that's as raw as their Josie
Records albums of the 60s! The vibe here is a great change from the
polished production the group were getting over at Warner Brothers -- and the concert setting allows the group to
really stretch out on some numbers -- taking them into instrumental
jamming territory you never would have heard on a two minute single from
years back!
Instrumentation includes keyboards from Art Neville, guitar from Leo Nocentelli, bass from George Porter, drums from Zig
Modeliste, and percussion from Cyril Neville. Japanese only
release.
|
The incredible 3 DVD 40th Anniversary box set was the only
Woodstock DVD you needed until this release of 14 unreleased performances
exclusive to this disc.
Featured are The Band, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Paul Butterfield,
Arlo Guthrie, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Country Joe, John Sebastian, Sly And
The Family Stone, Tim Hardin, Melanie, Joan Baez, Crosby, Stills and
Nash and Richie Havens.
Avoid all the other cash in Woodstock DVDs and own this. It's a killer

The Steve Miller Band
Sailor
CD
Before he became known for his streak of AOR hits from the mid 70' to
the mid 80's, Steve Miller made a clutch of critically acclaimed
psychedelic blues albums in the 60's - with this one arguably being the
pick of the bunch. Recorded and released in 1968, the first thing to note
is that the legendary Glyn Johns co-produced and engineered
proceedings. The second thing to note about this album is that Boz
Scaggs was in the band.
The album's opening track is the magnificently atmospheric and
memorable "Song For Our Ancestors". This track starts off with the
sound of fog horns - after which the band enters with dream-like music.
The space and textures utilised here are deployed with subtlety and taste
to provide a unique listening experience. The band continue their dream
like approach with the excellent "Dear Mary". After which, things
pick-up tempo with "My Friend" (the track enters with some nice
feedback and exits with some dirty guitar). The band then literally roar
into the next track - courtesy of some hotted-up racing car sound effects
- with "Living In The USA". This great little rocker sees the band
leave some space for bass player Lonnie Turner to take centre stage
with some killer bass lines.
Other highlights include the psychedelic "Quicksilver Girl" -
which towards the end has a slight nod towards the Beatles
"Taxman"; a cover of Johnny Guitar Watson's "Gangster of Love"
; a nice cover of Jimmy Reed's "You're So Fine" and the very
good Boz Scagg's original Overdrive. These last three tracks
proudly show the band's blues roots.
Not long after the album was finished, Boz Scaggs left the band to
start his own solo career and record the highly regarded Boz Scaggs album for Atlantic Records - which features the great "Loan Me A
Dime" (a track renowned for some stellar guitar playing by the
legendary Duane Allman).
Sailor still sounds great 40 years after it first came out . Its fine
balance of spatial playing, sound fx and blues have fused cogently into a
psychedelic masterpiece. The cover art is captivating and was always a
stand-out when it was first released on vinyl. If you like Sailor, then
you may want to consider some of Steve Miller's other albums - Children
Of The Future and Brave New World (both Glyn Johns
productions). These are also recommended.
