The Visitors lifespan was very short with only a dozen shows. They played their first event with friends The Lipstick Killers at the end of 1978 at The Stagedoor Tavern and their last at the same venue in August 1979 as part of the Comrades of War and Hitmen triple bill. Deniz was to leave for the US after the show.
The cd has been deleted for over 10 years and has now been remastered with new cover artwork and 12 page booklet. Includes all 4 tracks from their Phantom 12" plus reworking of " Skimp The Pimp " , originally recorded by Deniz's pre Birdman outfit TV Jones.
So great that it's back in print. Deniz, Pip and Mark with new rhythm section play Saturday 30th at The Empire in Annandale. The new lineup is on fire. See you there !!

The Moffs were really the odd band out in the roster of their label Citadel. The majority of the bands on Citadel took their influences from US 60's and 70's Garage bands but the Moffs were far more influenced by UK Freakbeat / Psych / Garage bands of the same time. For 5 years between 1984 - 89, their journey took them from the beaches of Maroubra to topping the inner city indie charts to world wide critical acclaim.
This collection contains their original 6 track demo ( previously only released on cassette ), their mini lp, their only full length " Labyrinth ", all 3 45's plus rare demos. 30 tracks in all, 11 on cd for the first time. Remastered with 26 page book booklet including rare photos, handbills and poster art - all documented and researched by music historian Dr.Tim Pittman. Essential slice of Australian rock and roll culture.

I Got The Feeling
James Brown in the '60s

Serving as the missing link between electronic pioneers SPK and mainstream chart toppers The Cruel Sea (guitarist/songwriter Danny Rumour served time in both while SS front man David Virgin was the co-writer on the first three impossibly rare SPK singles), Sekret Sekret confused, bemused and delighted Sydney audiences from their birth late in 1979 until their untimely demise some five years later.
Feel head honcho Tim Pittman and founding Sekret Sekret member, Des Devlin have dug up some 32 tracks; 23 of which have never before been released in any format. These include: All four singles (and their b-sides); Charity, New King Jack, Girl With a White Stick, Just to Love You. Two Triple J radio sessions recorded, respectively, at Sydney's infamous Rock Garden (1980) and the Trade Union Club (1983). Two further desk recordings - again from 1980 and 1983. The lone remaining track comes from a 1981 demo session with Oz guitar legend Lobby Loyde.
Additionally, and as with all Feel Presents archival releases, this 2CD collection comes with a 26 page booklet chronicling the rise of the band from the ashes of Sydney's infamous punk pit 'The Grand Hotel' and such legendary outfits as Johnny Dole and the Scabs, The Broken Toys, Blackrunner and SPK - right through to their eventual collapse and subsequent rebirth (via three of the original five members) under the altogether more successful banner of The Cruel Sea. Ignore at your peril. |
Put simply this is the greatest / most important Soul / Funk dvd ever released !!!!! The 3 DVD set is the definitive look at JB's on-stage prowess, including an acclaimed documentary, 2 previously unreleased ( officially ) concerts, and more. DVD #1 includes The Night James Brown Saved Boston about a 1968 concert that averted riots in the aftermath of MLK's assassination. DVD #2 is a live 1968 concert at Boston Garden. DVD #3 is a live 1968 concert from the Apollo Theater plus bonus performances from 1967 and 1968 at L'Olympia in Paris plus a performance from the 1964 T.A.M.I. Show.
In the immediate wake of Martin Luther King's assassination, many of America's inner cities became fraught with riots, and the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston was threatening to erupt once and for all. Nervous at the possibility, Boston's mayor contacted soul legend James Brown, who had a major concert scheduled for the night after the historic murder, and asked for help. Brown, already a burgeoning civil rights hero, allowed the concert to be televised, and urged his fans to stay home--a peace-keeping move now credited with keeping the city from burning. VH1's "Rock Doc" THE NIGHT JAMES BROWN SAVED BOSTON, presented here alongside two other full-length James Brown concerts from the 1960s, features rarely seen footage of the historic performance, and explores the remarkable events of the tragic day.

California Screaming

The second Hip-O Select volume of his classic Chess recordings has arrived and like volume one , which is already out of print, only 5000 copies for the world. It's a case of you snooze, you lose. This 52-track volume covers all of his 1959 home and Chess studio recordings, plus half of his first 1960 session. And it shows Bo expanding his musical base far and wide, including adding a second guitarist, emphasizing melodies very different than his original blues base, and working on a number of intriguing guitar and rhythm-based instrumentals.
There is only one major hit here, the title song, but this volume is a treasure trove of Diddley-ized rare gems - 20 previously unreleased songs or alternates - plus many tracks seeing light of day on CD for the first time . Get it while you can.

Finally, footage of Taste has surfaced. Performances from Belgium 1969, Isle Of Wight 1970 and Beat Club 1970. Only 50 minutes but it's as great as it is short .
If by some strange chance you're not up to speed with how great Rory Gallagher is, then this is the perfect place to start.

Bo Diddley
Let Me Pass
CD
Recently departed original rock 'n roll great - Bo Diddley - released a number of great albums throughout his long career - including this one - which is an overlooked gem. Released in 1965, Let Me Pass shows Bo strutting his guitar chops on some excellent material.
The title track is a prime example of Bo guitar magic - it's one of the best things the great man recorded . It also has some very amusing lyrics. Other highlights include the instrumental "Corn Bread" which has some great stinging lead guitar sound; and the fabulous "Soul Food," another great Bo Diddley rocker lost in the middle of the '60s soul boom -- Bo is so smooth, impassioned, sexy, and raw, and thebacking vocal group the Cookies sound so great behind him - it's a crime that t this song was never a hit. Don't pass this one....

Amped Up Trailblazers
Hard Rock Gems from the late 60's and early 70's
Free
Bursting onto the scene in 1968, this group of then teenagers took the music world by storm with their stripped down version of rock, blues, and soul.
The band compromised of Andy Fraser (bass - who had played with John Mayall), Simon Kirke (drums), Paul Kossoff (guitar) and Paul Rodgers (vocals).
Their debut album - Tons of Sob (1968) was an impressive release which showed a maturity well beyond their years. It laid down the foundation of what made Free so good - a solid / imaginative rhythm section with ringing tasty guitar and soulful vocals.
The follow-up album - Free (1969) - was also a highly commendable effort, despite the fact that the sessions were tense with some friction between band members over "musical differences" .
It took the third album Fire and Water (1970) to really break the band courtesy of the hit single "Alright Now". The album was also an artistic peak and included some of their best tracks - the title song (which was also covered by legendary soul singer WIlson Pickett), "Mr. Big " and "Heavy Load".
By the time Highway (1971) came out - the band was experiencing internal problems - but still managed to record some great tracks including "Ride On A Pony" and "Be My Friend".
After this album the band split up - Kossoff and Kirke joined forces with session keyboard mainman John Bundrick (Rabbit) and Japanese bass player Tetsu Yamauchi for the one off album Kossoff / Kirke/ Tetsu and Rabbit. Unsurprisingly, the bands' sound was reminiscent of Free. Rodgers and Fraser both had unsuccessful ventures during this period.
While this period of change was happening - Island released Free Live (1971). At the time it looked like it was going to be Free's epitaph. And what a fitting epitaph it would have been as it still stands as one of the best live albums ever released from that period. (It was recorded by sound engineer guru Andy Johns). The live version of Alright Now wipes the floor with the studio version. Simon Kirke's drum sound is one of the best ever recorded on a live album. In fact the whole band sounds great and are in fine form.
In 1972, the band decided to reform - probably as a result of their other projects not amounting to much. They managed to put together Free At Last - which was a respectable effort despite the fact that Kossoff's drug addiction was starting to affect the band. Andy Fraser was fed up with the situation and went off to form the very interesting Sharks - which featured guitar supremo Chris Spedding.
Tetsu and Rabbit were recruited for the groups' final studio effort - Heartbreaker (1973). Again it was a decent album and it gained the band another hit with "Wishing Well" - but Kossoff was "wasted" for most of the sessions and subsequently, the band fell apart. Rodgers and Kirke went on to greater success with Bad Company - whilst Kossoff went onto front Back Street Crawler before dying of drug addiction in 1976.
All Free albums have been re-issued and remastered (Fire and Water has had the "Deluxe" treatment). In addition, anyone interested in the group may want to check out the Free BBC Sessions album as well as the excellent Free Forever DVD. The Dot Man.
